During the following years until 1965, the use of fertilizers spread rather moderately. Starting with 1966, demand for fertilizers soared, and in 1968 it reached 80,000 tonnes. The bulk of the fertilizers used in imported, local production being limited to one nitrogen factory in Mae Mo, which has a capacity of 25,000 tonnes of nutrients. The upsurge in demand was due to intensified government research on fertilization, new measures for providing credit to farmers, and keen competition between big fertilizer importers resulting in lower fertilizer prices and more favourable credit terms. Fertilizer comsumption in Thailand, however, is still extremely low in relation to the country's potential or compared with the consumption of other comparable countries, the current use constituting only 12 percent of the optimum level application. In 1968 the average nutrient use came to 8 kg per hactare.สาระสังเขป: The strong competition among importers-the main impetus for the rapid increase in fertilizer demand-cannot be expected to go on indefinitely. Some small firms have already been forced out of the field, and sooner or later the ramaining bigger firms have to come together and fix fertilizer prices. This may cause stagnation in fertilizer consumption, and action should be taken to prevent it. Feasibility studies of local production of fertilizers should be encouraged. However, apart from lignite, which is already being fully tapped, no other raw material deposits are known; hence the fertilizer industries in Thailand have to be limited to blending plants producing mixed fertilizers. The effective demand for these has reached 250,000 tonnes in 1969, and the projected demand will be of the order of 500,000 tonnes around mid-seventies. At this magnitude, the demand justifies the establishment of fertilizer blending plants. These plants can absorb the full production capacity of the existing fertilizer plant at Mae Mo. In fact the present production capacity of the Mae Mo plant will not meet the total N requirement of the blending plants. Addition nitrogenous as well as phosphoric and potassic fertilizers will have to be imported, but suitable fillers can be selected from the available local materials. To determine the size, location, and cost of the blending plants and to select materials for mixing which will yield best results, detailed feasibility studies are needed. S.K
