The fruit is used in Asian traditional medicine to treat diarrhea, jaundice, skin disorders, inflammations, premature graying and the burning sensation of the body. The fruits contain high amounts of ascorbic acid and tannins, as well as other polyphenols as flavonoids, kaempferol, ellagic acid and gallic acid. Zanthoxylum limonella Alston (RUTACEAE), locally called 'Ma-Khwaen', is a deciduous, aromatic, medium-sized tree native to India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Indo-China, Malaysia and Java. Its edible fruits are used as spice in northern Thailand. The fruits contain alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, steroids, fixed oil, volatile oil and glycosides. The non-irritant patented mixed fruit extracts of P. emblica and Z. limonella are non toxic to human dermal fibroblasts. The mixed extract was anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory (>70% COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition), anti-oxidant and anti-tyrosinase effective which is beneficial as an active agent in cosmeceutics. Various skin, hair and oral cosmeceutical products were developed comprising the patented mixed fruit extracts of P. emblica and Z. limonella. RP-HPLC was used for quality control analysis of the products. OECD guidelines were followed for animal safety evaluation. สาระสังเขป: มะขามป้อม (Phyllanthus emblica L. วงศ์ EUPHORBIACEAE) ชื่ออังกฤษ Indian gooseberry เป็นไม้ผลัดใบขนาดกลางที่พบในเขตมรสุมเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ไปจนถึงมาเลเซีย ตำรายาแผนโบราณของเอเชียใช้ผลมะขามป้อมรักษาอาการท้องเดิน, ดีซ่าน, โรคผิวหนัง, อาการอักเสบ, ผมหงอกก่อนวัย และอาการปวดแสบปวดร้อนของร่างกาย ผลมะขามป้อมมีวิตามินซีสูง มีแทนนินและสารพอลิฟีนอลอื่น เช่น ฟลาโวนอยด์ คาเอมเฟอรอล กรดเอลลาจิคและกรดแกลลิค. มะแขว่น (Zanthoxylum limonella Alston วงศ์ RUTACEAE) เป็นไม้ผลัดใบมีกลิ่น พบได้ในอินเดีย, ศรีลังกา, ไทย, พม่า, อินโดจีน, มาเลเซีย, ชวา มีผลกินได้ใช้เป็นเครื่องเทศในอาหารภาคเหนือของไทย ผลมะแขว่นมีอัลคาลอยด์, แทนนิน, ฟลาโวนอยด์, สารฟีนอลิก, สเตอรอยด์ น้ำมันที่มีจุดเดือดสูง น้ำมันระเหยและกลัยโคไซด์. จากการวิจัยพบว่า สารสกัดจากผลมะขามป้อมและผลมะแขว่นซึ่งไม่ระคายเคืองผิวหนังสัตว์ทดลอง เมื่อผสมกันในสัดส่วนที่เหมาะสมซึ่งได้จดสิทธิบัตรไว้แล้ว ไม่มีพิษต่อเซลล์ผิวหนังมนุษย์, มีฤทธิ์ต้านจุลินทรีย์, มีฤทธิ์ต้านอักเสบ (ยับยั้ง cyclooxygenase ทั้ง COX-1 และCOX-2 ได้มากกว่า 70%), มีฤทธิ์ต้านออกซิเดชันและต้านเอนไซม์ไทโรซิเนส ซึ่งสามารถนำมาใช้เป็นสารสกัดออกฤทธิ์ในเวชสำอางได้. คณะนักวิจัยได้ทำการพัฒนาเวชสำอางหลายชนิดสำหรับผิว, ผม และช่องปาก ซึ่งมีส่วนผสมของสารสกัดจากผลมะขามป้อมและผลมะแขว่น ทำการควบคุมคุณภาพสารสกัดในผลิตภัณฑ์โดยวิเคราะห์ด้วยวิธี HPLC และผ่านการทดสอบความปลอดภัยในสัตว์ทดลองตามข้อกำหนดของ OECD.
