Facilities for building materials research are located in the Technological Research Institute of ASRCT, the Department of Science of the Ministry of Industry, and the Forest Research Institute of the Royal Forest Department of the Ministry of Agriculture. Building materials research requires close cooperation of different disciplines to its maximum practical value. Manufacture, design, and use of building materials are interrelated, and the research on materials proper must be complemented with the investigations into their optimal constructional uses, their physical and chemical behaviours under specific conditions, etc. The establishment of all the mentioned facilities within a central building research institute would not be justified in Thailand at this stage due to difficulty of recruiting qualified research personnel, the large outlay needed, and the time required for the realization of such a project. The basic requirement seems to be a better coordination of existing activities and planning for building research expansion on a national level. The following actions appear desirable : (1) formation of a national building research and development advisory committee (NBRDAC); the committee should determine objectives of building research and provide a research and development policy on a national level; (2) formation of a building research centre as part of ASRCT to advise NBRDAC on technical problems and choice of investigation and development work; to corrdinate work of different technical committees; to cooperate with other orgainzations concerned with building research and development; to carry out investigations in its own and other ASRCT laboratories; and to compile publish, and disseminate knowledge of all building research and development activities.
