Manufacture of cement is well organized, and further developments can be expected in the field of market innovation. Many cement-based products have already been manufactured and marketed successfully, i.e. hollow concrete blocks, precast and prestressed concrete elements, foundation piles, plain and reinforced pipes. Further improvements can be from a more intensive use of prestressed concrete, e.g. in large-span industrial buildings; important industrial plant buildings allowing application of elements prefabricated on site and assembled by prestressing; thin-shell roofs of different forms; prefabricated girders and floor slabs for housing projects. Another possible application of prestressed concrete is in the construction of large hydraulic objects. Attempts should be made to reduce the dead load of concrete. One solution is to use lightweight aggregrates, which, for structural applications, can be inorganic materials such as pumice, broken brick, foamed slag, clinker, and expanded clay. For Thailand the latter should be given first consideration, since deposits of clay minerals are widespread, and their potential as a source of concrete aggregate is almost without limit. Another new material which should be given serious consideration in Thailand is cellular gas concrete. The most useful application in Thailand would be in the form of reinforced slabs-storey-high vertical slabs for exterior and interior walls, large horizontal slabs for industrial and other public buildings, roofing slabs. Manufacture of gas concrete in Thailand should be based on cement and sand. The only materials that need to be imported are aluminium powder and casein.สาระสังเขป: Limestone is widely distributed in many parts of Thailand and is used on a large scale for highway construction and as a railroad ballast. The uses of lime for soil stabilization, masonry mortars, and autoclaved calcium silicate products, particularly sand-lime bricks, should be studies. -S.K.สาระสังเขป: Thailand has the largest gypsum reserves in South-east Asia. Cypsum is used almost exclusively as a portland cement being only on a pilot-plant scale. In Europe and the United States many gypsum-based products are used in building construction: cementitious materials (for interior acoustic treatment, interior finish, fireproofing, etc.); solid and hollow plaster blocks (for lightweight fire-resistant interior partitions, furring and fireproofing of columns); plaster decking; plaster sheets and integrants; precast plaster walls; plaster panels and partitioning boards. For Thailand, the hot-humid climate excludes the exterior application of plaster building units. New gypsum-based products will be mainly cementitious materials and fibrous plaster and plasterboards used for partitioning and lining.
