First of all, shells were cleaned by soaking in acid solution. The ratio of volume of hydrochloric acid to weight of shells used was 0.38-0.59 millilitre per gramme. The shells were then baked in order to prevent cracking or breaking on being pressed. Furthermore, the baked shells were bleached with hydrogen peroxide solution. The ratio of volume of hydrogen peroxide to weight of shells used corresponded to 0.33-0.38 millilitre per gramme.
