The fermentation system consisted of 4-stage fermentation jars with capacity of 5 litres. The first jar was aerated to enhance yeast propagation. The other jars were under anaerobic condition. There trials were performed at different dilution rates i.e. 0.05, 0.06 and 0.07 per hour. Yeast strain TISTR 5013, which was proved to be suitable for ethanol fermentation from cassava, was used. Cell recycling was conducted by filtration of cream yeast from broth out and re-feeding to the first jar together with new medium. The fermentation time consumed for each trial was about 8-10 days. The fermentation efficiency was calculated to be 74.16, 92.95 and 91.49 percent for the trial of dilution rate 0.05, 0.06 and 0.07 per hour, respectively. In comparison, the fermentation efficiency of batch type fermentation was 92.99 percent. The production of ethanol from cassava by multi-stage continuous fermentation with cell recycling was proved technically feasible.
