There will, therefore, continue to be keen competition among balers who largely depend on custom baling for their livelihood. The majority of the balers in Thailand, however, use their baling facilities for their mixed kenaf wich they buy from formers and dealers and sell after baling to Bangkok exporters through wholesale commission agents. If operated at normal capacity (2,400 tonnes per press in a season), a one-press baling centre provides employment for 19,295 man-days (besides employment of a manager and a clerk, who are employed more or less on an annual basis), assuming a 210 day work season, or 92 persons each day. On this basis, the kenaf baling industry provides employment for some 6.5 million man-days, or to 31, 192 workers each day for 210 days.สาระสังเขป: Analysis of costs, returns, and rate of return on investment reveals that an initial capital of one million baht is required to set up a one-press baling centre. The buildings and furniture share 60% of total fixed investment, whereas labour costs share 64% of annual operation and maintenance costs. At normal capacity a one-press baling centre can earn an annual return of 31.62%, and the entire capital investment will be returned to the entrepreneur in a little more than three years or one-third of the life of the centre. Even if the baling centre operates at 1,500-tonne (62.5% of normal) capacity, the 15% internal rate of return is attractive enough to recover the sunken capital over a period of 10 years. - S.K.สาระสังเขป: Baling, which includes grading and pressing, is important in marketing kenaf in the world markets because a bale is associated with a particular grade of fibre. Given grade specifications, it becomes easier to trade kenaf fibre of different grades without the necessity of a prior sample being sent to the prospective buyer overseas. Besides significant saving in insurance, transport, storage, and handling costs compared to loosely packed bales, standard bales permit easy quality control both at the buyers' and sellers' ends. Bales also sell for a relatively higher price per kg of kenaf.สาระสังเขป: Kenaf played a minor role in the agricultural economy of Thailand before 1960. During the period 1960-1967, production of retted and washed kenaf fibre increased by 1,218 percent due to incentive provided by rising prices of the fibre in the international market. The development of the baling industry kept pace with production. It is now an important component of the Thai economy: it helps to earn foreign exchange through the export of kenaf fibre which by law must be baled before export. The interesting features of growth of the industry are not only the rapid growth but also geographical mobility and shift in size of the baling centres. During the sixties, the industry moved away from the Bangkok-Thon Buri urban-industrial complex to the rural areas of the north-eastern region, and the major portion of growth took place there. Before 1960, the size of individual baling centres was on an average large, the majority of centres having three or more presses; during the sixties the situation changed significantly in favour of small size baling centres with one or two presses.
