In particular the high temperatures prevailing cause problems, since most fermentations produce a good deal of heat, and cold water for cooling is unavailable. Furthermore, auxiliary ingredients such as urea have to be imported, and local markets for the products are generally limited. (2) Industrial alcohol production is likely to be the most satisfactory proposition. The distillery at Ayutthaya is producing at far below its potential output, and, if conditions warrant, ASRCT could assist in this field. (3) Monosodium glutamate is being produced in considerable quantities for the local market; there is no place for ASRCT work in this field. (4) Vinegar is widely produced on a cottage-industry basis; ASRCT should help this industry. (5) Butanol and acetone productions require more sophisticated techniques than alcohol production and are not likely to prove very profitable. (6) Citric acid production is very difficult, especially in the purification stage; work on this project should be discontinued. (7) No other fermentation processes appear to be profitable at present under Thai conditions. Antibiotic production, even in crude form, is not recommended. (8) Work on food microbiology, especially the current work on fish preservation is recommended. (9) Work to improve the production of fermented fish sauce should be worthwhile, and it is recommended that studies in this field be initiated. (10) ASRCT should collect data on industrial uses of enzymes so that information can be available to potential users. (11) ASRCT might examine ways of converting cheap starches into other products such as glucose, possibly using enzymes. (12) Attention should be given to the utilization of waste corbon dioxide and the recovery of fusel oil from alcohol plants. S.K
