Surplus agricultural products and by-products of certain industries can be converted into fermentable carbohydrate and nitrogenous materials necessary for growth of microorganisms of industrial importance. These organisms in turn will accumulate metabolic products or commercial value, e.g. enzymes, amino acids, protein concentrates, brewery products, industrial alcohols and other organic solvents, vitamins, organic acids, fats, hormones, antibiotics, etc. Simple cultivation of certain microorganisms such as mushroom mycelium and some yeasts can also provide extra sources of food. Through the use of appropriate microorganisms some industrial wastes can either be profitably utilized or effectively destroyed.สาระสังเขป: Thailand exports huge quantities of her raw agricultural products each year. Products such as corn (maize), soybean, peanut, castor seed, cottonseed, kapok seed would better utilized if the oil were pressed out and refined and the residues processed for starch. The steep liquor, obtained as waste during the preparation of starch, is very rich in nitrogenous materials and can be used for the growth of industrially important microorganisms. Sources of carbohydrates are available through tapioca flour, starches including corn starch and starches from oil seed residues, as well as molasses, all of which yield glucose upon hydrolysis; and glucose is readily utilized by microorganisms. Crude agricultural wastes, e.g. corn cobs, cottonseed hulls, kapok seed hulls, peanut hulls, rice hulls, bagasse, contain large amounts of pentosan, cellulose, and lignin; and these can be converted into valuable substances needed in several industries. It is recommended that research be undertaken in steps under the following topics: (1) survey a agricultural products and agricultural wastes for possible use in industrial fermentation; (2) industrial use of agricultural wastes through acidic and enzymatic hydrolysis; (3) isolation and development of strains of moulds, yeasts, and bacteria for industrial use; (4) preparation of mould brans and microbial enzymes of industrial importance; (5) fermentation programmes; and (6) utilization of industrial wastes.
