The substance obtained could exhibit antibacterial activity on P. acnes (in vitro) and antiinflammatory (in vivo) from 1.5% level up. It was a dose response activity. The 2% ethanol extract of C. xanthorrhiza gel correspondingly showed antimicrobial activity on P. acnes and other 3 pathogenic dermal microbes (S. epidermidis, S. aureus and C. albicans). It also showed effective antiinflammatory activity. No toxicity signs were observed on the acute dermal toxicity and the skin irritation studies.
