Six locations, mostly in the highland at various elevations of Changwat Chiang Mai, were selected as the sites of the experiment. The study includes the method of planting, yields of mint crop and oil, and the method of oil extraction. The primitive method of planting was adopted. The fresh weight yields of the first and the second cuttings were very low, while the oil percentage and menthol content were quite high. The reasons for low yield were the presence of numerous weeds, poor stolon development in shallow soil, low moisture content in the soil, and shorter light-hour per day in the highland. No natural enemy was found; and once established, mint is a good cover crop to prevent soil erosion, especially on the steep slopesสาระสังเขป: The authors are confident that, with proper improvements of the controllable conditions, by yield of mint crop and oil per unit area would be increased; and the hope that mint is a potential new crop for the hill-tribes would materialize.
