The dired stalks took longer to ret but, apart from a darkening in colour, produced fibre of nearly the same quality as the fresh material. In the second experiment various retting treatments were given to freshly harvested kenaf stalks. The best results were obtained when there was a daily dilution of the retting liquor with 20 percent fresh water, which served to prevent the pH falling below about 5. Aeration of the retting liquor also gave good results but was less convenient than the dilution technique. Inoculating the ret with liquor from a previous ret was detrimental, probably because of the resultant lowering of the pH. Authors.
