The longan fruits were harvested and packed at the orchard in Chiang Mai. They were trucked down to Bangkok International Airport and forwarded by air to Singapore. There were two types of packaging being used, namely 1) corrugated boxes dimension of 45.5 x 34.5 x 19.0 cm with the net weight of 11 kg and 2) bamboo baskets dimension of 43 x 43 x 39 cm with the net weight of 22 kg.สาระสังเขป: During the inspection of the longan fruits at Singapore, approximately 1-4 per cent of the fruits were rotten, this immediately spoiled the look and depreciated the price of the fruits. The cause was probably due to "fruit moths and fruit fly". There were also some dropping of fruits from stem and in term of percentage were between 6 to 8.สาระสังเขป: The corrugated boxes used for packaging were suitable for handling and transportation with the exception that the thickness and the strength of the paper should be improved so that it can withstand the moisture in the cold room. The ventilation holes should also be increased. The advantages of using corrugated boxes from bamboo baskets is not only that they fit into the aircraft container (type LD-3) but also increased the volume. But if the size of the bamboo baskets were reduced from the present size, not only will they increase the volume when loaded into the container, but will make the handling and transportation of these bamboo basket a lot more easier.
