The fruits were harvested and packed at the orchard in Chiang Mai. They were trucked down to Bangkok International Airport and forwarded by air to Singapore. Two types of packaging used were corrugated cartons and bamboo baskets. The carton was composed of 4 tray-type single-wall boxes, packed in transported double-wall box dimension of 44.0 x 35.5 x 33.5 cm with the total net weight of 20 kg, whereas the bamboo baskets, 41 cm diameter and 21 cm high, contained longan fruits with the net weight of 10 kg. The results showed that the design of the tray-type boxes was not practical and the transport carton of the gross weight of about 22 kg was too heavy to handle. The proper packaging of longans for Singapore appeared to be bamboo baskets with the net weight of 10 kg because they were convenient to handle and the empty baskets could be re-used.สาระสังเขป: Only few fruits were bruised and rotten during transportation. The bruished fruits found in the boxes and baskets were 0.012 and 0.375 per cent, respectively, whereas the corresponding figures for rotten fruits were 0.162 and 0.485 per cent.
