These extracts were selected based on their pharmacological effects on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as brain and nervous system diseases, cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal tract and liver diseases, cancer, and immunomodulatory effects. Subsequently, the most potent extracts for each system were chosen to be developed as natural functional ingredients and health food products, with the goal of reducing the risk factors associated with disease development in the elderly with NCDs. Extensive evaluations of toxicity, efficacy, and quality control were also carried out. The ultimate aim of this research was to transfer the technology to entrepreneurs in the health food industry, food ingredient industry, and dietary supplements industry.
The pharmacological effects of this research demonstrated that the 70% ethanolic extract of chayote and kohlrabi exhibited the most significant effects on brain and nervous system diseases, effectively reducing the risk of developing dementia. The 95% ethanolic extract of lotus seed showed potential in managing high blood pressure by assisting in blood pressure reduction. Moreover, the 95% ethanolic extract of Indian gooseberry demonstrated the ability to lower total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, while also helping control and reduce the risk of fatty liver. Additionally, the 95% ethanolic extract of golden needle mushroom displayed anti-inflammatory properties and immune-boosting effects. The acute and sub-chronic toxicity of these extracts were evaluated in rats to assess their safety profiles, and all extracts were found to be non-toxic. Therefore, the 70% ethanolic extract of chayote and kohlrabi extracts were further developed into a cocoa drink product mixed with chayote and kohlrabi extracts, aimed at reducing the risk of developing dementia. The 95% ethanolic extract of lotus seed was formulated into an instant soup powder mixed with lotus seed extracts, intended to help lower blood pressure. Similarly, the 95% ethanolic extract of Indian gooseberry was utilized in the production of a carunda pudding mixed with Indian gooseberry extract, designed to control total cholesterol and triglyceride levels and mitigate the risk of fatty liver.
