The first technology generates heat and utilizes waste heat as hot air in the drying process of the cashew nut kernel. The second technology is used to steam cashew nuts with shells. Laboratory experiments showed that the rate of moisture evaporation from the cashew nut kernel using the hot air drying from the biomass furnace was similar to that of electric oven drying. The efficiency of steaming cashew nuts with shells was found to be affected by the weight of water, which in turn impacts fuel consumption. TISTR has transferred biomass furnace technology to community enterprises for producing heat for steaming cashew nuts with shells. The waste heat is also utilized as hot air for drying other products, thereby reducing the temperature of the waste heat before it is released into the atmosphere. Measurements of air pollution and particulate matter, with a size less than 2.5 micrograms, indicate that the values are within the acceptable standards. By using the biomass furnace technology, the cost of biomass fuel for steaming 1 kg of cashew nuts with shells is 0.88 baht, and the operation time required to steam 40 kg of cashew nuts with shells is 75 minutes. In comparison, the cost of liquefied petroleum fuel for the original furnace is 2.22 baht per kg of cashew nuts with shells, and the operation time required to steam 20 kg of cashew nuts with shells is 90 minutes.
