This product had passed efficacy and safety evaluation with clinical testing for safety. Research and development of the Lico-scars cream began with selection of potential herbal extracts. In vitro studies of total 30 herbal extracts indicated that Licorice extract had inhibitory activities on the proliferation of keloid fibroblast and the secretion of IL6.The Licrorice extract possessed anti-inflammatory activity that helps wound healing and thereby reduction of keloid and hypertrophic scars. In addition, the extract exhibited antioxidant activity that aids in skin smoothing and had anti-tyrosinase activity in improving texture of hypertrophic scars. With above mentioned properties of the extract, it was then developed to topical cream with subsequent animal test for hypertrophic scars. Our results showed that the Lico-scars cream was effective in reducing hypertrophic scarring in the rabbit ear model statistically significant compared with a base cream.The cream was considered safe when evaluated for acute dermal toxicity, acute dermal irritation and skin sensitisation testing. Moreover, in the human volunteer study, it revealed that the cream was non-irritating to human skin. According to the questionnaire survey of focus group to the Lico-scars cream out of the 210 study participants, they reported the overall product likeness after testing at a high level of satisfaction.สาระสังเขป: ผลิตภัณฑ์ทาภายนอก "ครีมชะเอมเทศ" (Lico-scar cream) ซึ่งพัฒนาข ึ้ นมาจากงานวิจัยน ี้ เป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ที่มีสรรพคุณลดการเกิดแผลเป็นนูน (Keloid and hypertrophic scars) ผ่านการ ทดสอบประสิทธิภาพและความปลอดภัย มีผลการทดสอบความปลอดภัยทางคลินิก งานวิจัยน ี้ เริ่ม จากการคัดเลือกสมุนไพรที่มีศักยภาพ จากสารสกัดสมุนไพรทั้ งหมด 30 ชนิด โดยทําการทดสอบใน หลอดทดลอง (In vitro study) พบว่า สารสกัดชะเอมเทศ (Licorice extract) มีฤทธิ์ยับย ั้ งการแบ่ง ตัวของ keloid fibroblast และยับย ั้ งการหลั่ง IL-6 และนอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า สารสกัดชะเอมเทศมี ฤทธิ์ยับย ั้ งการอักเสบ ซึ่งทําให้แผลหายเร็วจึงลดการเกิดแผลเป็นนูน มีฤทธิ์ต้านอนุมูลอิสระ (Antioxidant) ช่วยให้ผิวเรียบเนียน และมีฤทธิ์ต้านเอนไซม์ไทโรซิเนส (Anti-tyrosinase) ช่วยปรับสภาพสี ผิวของแผลเป็น จากคุณสมบัติเหล่าน ี้ จึงนําสารสกัดชะเอมเทศมาพัฒนาเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ชนิดครีมและ นําไปทดสอบฤทธิ์ ลดการเกิดแผลเป็นนูนในสัตว์ทดลอง (Surgical Excision in Rabbit Ear Model) พบว่า ครีมชะเอมเทศมีประสิทธิภาพในการลดการเกิดแผลเป็นนูน (Hypertrophic scars) ที่บริเวณ ใบหูกระต่ายได้อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติเมอเท ื่ ียบกับครีมเบส จากการศึกษาพบว่า ผลิตภัณฑ์ครีม ชะเอมเทศ มีความปลอดภัยเม ื่ อนํามาทดสอบความเป็นพิษเฉียบพลัน การก่อความระคายเคืองและ การก่อการแพ้ในผิวหนัง อีกท ั้ งเม ื่ อนํามาศึกษาในอาสาสมัครพบว่า ไม่ก่อให้เกิดอาการระคายเคืองต่อ ผิวหนังมนุษย์ จากการสํารวจความคิดเห็นของกลุ่มเป้าหมายที่มีต่อผลิตภัณฑ์ "ครีมชะเอมเทศ" ใน ผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามท ั้ งหมด จํานวน 210 คน ความชอบโดยรวมต่อผลิตภัณฑ์หลังการทา มีความพึง พอใจต่อผลิตภัณฑ์อยู่ในระดับมาก.
