Lemon grass oil was found to be superior to the others. The oil was extracted by steam distillation of wilted leaves of lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC) Stapf.) cultivated in Thailand. citral and myrcene were found to be the major components. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum lethal concentration (MLC) against 35 clinical isolates of dermatophytes, Trichophyton rubrum; T. mentagrophytes; Epidermophyton floccosum and Microsporum gypseum, were determined by agar dilution method. Antifungal efficacy and safety evaluation of "TROLOT CREAM", or lemon grass oil cream developed by TISTR were performed in vitro by hole diffusion method and in laboratory animal respectively. Phase I and II of clinical studies had been completely assessed. The results showed that "TROLOL CREAM" possessed potential antifungal.สาระสังเขป: ผลการศึกษาสารสกัดจากพืชสมุนไพรไทยที่มีรายงานว่ามีฤิทธิ์ต้านเชื่อราจำนวนมากกว่า 10 ชนิด พบว่าน้ำมันตะไคร้ให้ผลดีที่สุด. องค์ประกอบที่สำคัญของน้ำมันตะไคร้คือ citral และ mycrene. ได้ทดสอบหาค่า minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) และ minimum lethal concentration (MLC) โดยวิธี agar dilution method กับเชื้อรา dermatophyte 4 ชนิด ได้แก่ Trichophyton rubrum; T. mentagrophytes; Epidermophyton floccosum และ Microsporum gypseum ที่แยกได้จากผู้ป่วยจำนวน 35 isolates. ผลิตภัณฑ์ของน้ำมันตะไคร้ที่พัฒนาขึ้นให้ชื่อว่า ครีมโทรลอล (TROLOL CREAM) โดยผ่านการทดสอบประสิทธิผลต้านเชื้อราทางห้องปฏิบัติการโดยวิธี hole diffusion method และผ่านการประเมินความปลอดภัยของผลิตภัณฑ์ในสัตว์ทดลอง. ผลการวิจัยขั้นคลินิกในระยะที่ 1 และ 2 พบว่าผลิตภัณฑ์มีประสิทธิภาพในการใช้ยาต้านเชื้อราได้ดี.
