Vegetative propagation was the best method to maintain gigantic characters from mother plants to plantlets. The gigantic characters are found in any plant parts such as roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds but mainly only in oversize of fruits that is interested. The project entitled "Survey and genetic conservation of gigantic varieties" conducted for 3 years since October 2002 to September 2005. Survey and collection of data and gigantic germplasm throughout the country depended on any referenced data mainly on 5 species : tamarind (Tamarindus indicus L lime (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle), jack fruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) plum mango (Bouea macrophylla Griff.) and banana (Musa spp.). Collection data on germplasm distribution and status of rare or endanger were evaluated and documented. Germplsm of gigantic tamarind and plum mango were highly propagated and widely grown by many Thai horticulturists and interested persons while jack fruit, lime and banana were not accepted because of unpalatable characters that might be extincted in the near future. Data on this project were opened to the public in the exhibition, reports, TISTR's journals and also many journals in the field of agriculture and sciences and technologies. - Authors.สาระสังเขป: พืชยักษ์ในประเทศไทยส่วนใหญ่มีการขยายพันธุ์โดยการงอกจากเมล็ด ทั้งที่เป็นแบบการงอกตามธรรมชาติ และที่คนไทยเพาะขึ้นมา แล้วเกิดการกลายพันธุ์มีขนาดใหญ่มากขึ้น พันธุกรรมของพืชยักษ์อาจมีการกลายพันธุ์เปลี่ยนแปลงต่อไปได้ หากนำเมล็ดของพืชยักษ์ไปเพาะต่อไปอีกพืชแต่ละชนิดมีโอกาสที่จะกลายพันธุ์เป็นพืชยักษ์ได้ พันธุกรรมของพืชยักษ์คงที่ได้เมื่อมีการขยายพันธุ์โดยวิธีที่ไม่ใช้เพศ ลักษณะของสายพันธุ์ยักษ์ พบได้ตั้งแต่ ระบบราก, ลำต้น, ใบ, ดอก, ผล และเมล็ด แต่ส่วนใหญ่จะสนใจกันแต่ลักษณะของผลที่ใหญ่เกิดปรกติที่เรียกว่า ผลยักษ์ในโครงการสำรวจและอนุรักษ์พันธุกรรมพืชยักษ์ ซึ่งมีระยะเวลาดำเนินการ 3 ปี ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2545 ถึงปี พ.ศ. 2548 ได้ทำการรวบรวมข้อมูลแหล่งพันธุกรรมจากแหล่งอ้างอิงต่าง ๆ มีการออกสำรวจถิ่นกำเนิดของพืชยักษ์แต่ละชนิดจากทั่วประเทศ โดยเน้นหนัก 5 ชนิด คือ มะขามเปรี้ยวยักษ์, มะนาวยักษ์, ขนุน, มะปราง และกล้วย ศึกษาการกระจายพันธุ์และสภาพความใกล้จะสูญพันธุ์แล้วเก็บตัวอย่างมาขยายพันธุ์และอนุรักษ์พันธุ์ พร้อมทั้งบันทึกข้อมูล พันธุกรรมของพืชยักษ์ที่เป็นมะขามเปรี้ยวยักษ์และมะปราง มีเกษตรกรปลูกกันอย่างแพร่หลาย มีการขยายพันธุ์จำนวนมากและเป็นที่ต้องการของผู้บริโภค ส่วนพันธุกรรมของพืชยักษ์ที่เป็นมะนาว ขนุนและกล้วย มีโอกาสที่จะสูญพันธุ์ได้เนื่องจากรสชาติไม่ตรงตามความต้องการของผู้บริโภค ข้อมูลของพืชยักษ์นี้มีการนำออกเผยแพร่โดยเสนอในงานนิทรรศการ วารสารและรายงานผลงานวิจัย. - ผู้แต่ง.
