The Piper nigrum extract at dose of 250 mg/kg has shown significant protective effect by lowering the level of blood GPT (ALT) and GOT (AST) in both models whereas the Curcuma longa extract (500 mg/kg) could protect rats D-Gal induced liver damage by reducing GPT and GOT. Bile flow was studied in anesthetised rats by surgical cannulation of bile duct. Reduction in CCl4 induced prolongation of sodium pentobarbital-induce sleeping time, which used to screen anti-CCl4 toxicity of drug was also investigated. It was found that Curcuma longa extract could increase biliary flow rate in anesthetised rats whereas Piper nigrum extract has potential to reduced sleeping time in CCl4 treated rats. Moreover, the proliferation of HepG2 was increased by both extracts after D-Gal treated while Ipomoea aquatica extract could enhance and protect HepG2 from hepatotoxic alcohol. These results indicated that the extract of Curcuma longa, Piper nigrum and Ipomoea aquatica were promising as hepatoprotective agents. Libetal-D, Livetal and Pivetal were formulated as polyherbal and single herbal tablets respectively. All tablet formulations were tested for hepatoprotective activities, and compared with Silymarin, a drug of choice for liver disorders. Both Livetal-D and Livetal tables showed hepatoprotective effect. In conclusion, Livetal-D, Livetal and Pivetal are the effective supplement tablets against D-Gal and CCl4 induced liver damage. Moreover, Livetal tablets could be used to protect liver damage from alcohol toxicant similar to Silymarin.สาระสังเขป: เมื่อนำสารสกัดหยาบของขมิ้นชัน, พริกไทยดำ และผักบุ้งจีน ที่มีคุณสมบัติเป็นสารป้องกันโรคตับมาพัฒนาเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์เสริมอาหารชนิดเม็ดเป็นสูตรผสมและสูตรเดี่ยว 3 สูตรคือ Livetal-D, Livetal และ Pivetal. นำผลิตภัณฑ์ทั้งสามมาศึกษาการออกฤทธิ์ป้องกันโรคตับโดยใช้วิธีการเช่นเดียวกับสารสกัดหยาบ พบว่า Pivetal, Livetal-D และ Livetal ออกฤทธิ์ป้องกันโรคตับชนิดเฉียบพลันจากสาร D-Gal และโรคตับอักเสบจากเชื้อไวรัสในหนูขาวได้ดีเช่นเดียวกับยามาตรฐาน Silymarin ผลิตภัณฑ์ทั้งสามชนิดมีฤทธิ์ป้องกันโรคตับได้ดีกว่าสารสกัดหยาบ แสดงว่าสารสกัดหยาบในสูตรผสมมีฤทธิ์เสริมซึ่งกันและกัน.สาระสังเขป: การวิจัยและพัฒนาผลิตภัณฑ์เสริมอาหารจากพืชสมุนไพรที่ออกฤทธิ์ป้องกันโรคตับของ ขมิ้นชัน, พริกไทยดำ, ดีปลี, ขึ้นฉ่ายและผักบุ้งจีนในครั้งนี้พบว่า สารสกัดหยาบจากพืชทั้ง 5 ชนิดดังกล่าวด้วยเอทิลแอลกอฮอล์ 95% สามารถออกฤทธิ์ป้องกันตับจากการถูกทำลายอย่างเฉียบพลันด้วยสาร D-galactosamine (D-Gal, 400 มิลลิกรัม/กิโลกรัม๗ และแบบเรื้อรังจากสาร Carbontetrachloride (CCl4 : Liquid paraffin, 1:1) ในหนูขาว (พันธุ์ Wistar) ทั้งสองเพศ โดยสาร สกัดหยาบพริกไทยดำที่ขนาด 250 มิลลิกรัม/กิโลกรัม ออกฤทธิ์ป้องกันพิษต่อตับทั้งชนิดเฉียบพลันจากสาร D-Gal และเรื้อรังจากสาร CCl4 โดยมีค่า GPT (ALT) และ GOT (AST) ลดลงในหนูทั้งสองเพศ, ส่วนสารสกัดขมิ้นชันขนาด 500 มิลลิกรัม/กิโลกรัม ออกฤทธิ์ป้องกันได้ดีเฉพาะพิษเฉียบพลัน สารสกัดหยาบที่มีผลต่อการเพิ่มอัตราการหลั่งน้ำดี ได้แก่ ขมิ้นชัน, ส่วนสารสกัดหยาบพริกไทยดำสามารถลดฤทธิ์ยาสลบใยหนูที่ได้รับสาร CCl4. ในขณะที่สารสกัดหยาบผักบุ้งจีนช่วยป้องกันเซลล์ HepG2 จากพิษของแอลกอฮอล์และกระตุ้นการเจริญของเซลล์ HepG2 ได้ดี, ขณะที่สารสกัดหยาบของขมิ้นชันและพริกไทยดำเพิ่มการเจริญของเซลล์และป้องกันการทำลายเซลล์จาก D-Gal ได้ดี จากผลดังกล่าวแสดงว่าสารสกัดหยาบจากพริกไทย, ขมิ้นชันและผักบุ้งจีนมีศักยภาพเป็นสารป้องกันโรคตับได้.สาระสังเขป: สรุปผลการศึกษาในครั้งนี้พบว่า ผลิตภัณฑ์สูตรผสม Livetal-D, Livetal และผลิตภัณฑ์สารสกัดเดี่ยว Pivetal มึคุณสมบัติเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์เสริมอาหารป้องกันโรคตับได้ นอกจากนี้ Livetal ยังมีแนวโน้มออกฤทธิ์ป้องกันตับจากพิษของแอลกอฮอล์ได้เช่นเดียวกับยามาตรฐาน Silymarin.
