The defects which degrade the material from prime quality and which occur preferentially on the top surface of the tinplates were found to be caused by low operating temperature, inadequate activity of the flux, and probable by unsuitable method of irrigation of the flux. The existing design of the hot-dip tank, however, limited the maximum tinning temperature which could be used to about 310 degree celsius as compared with the generally accepted range of 325-340 degree celsius. Nevertheless, by increasing the activity of the flux, raising the ammonium chloride content to about 9 percent and modification of the flux irrigation procedure, it has been possible to effect a high yield rate of prime quality grade of about 95 percent.
