A previous study of the method of manufacture indicated that the technique used by the Mint involved several days in-process time. The most time-consuming operation is the mould making, and defects originating from the mould materials add to the delay in the finishing operation. In the present investigation, a faster and more reliable technique of mould preparation, based on the ceramic shell mould process, has been developed. The new method depends largely on the control of the raw materials and processing conditions whilst the actual mould making can be performed by relatively unsiled operators. The technique use colloidal silica sol slurry for the primary dip coat and ethyl silicate-based slurry for the secondary coatings. Moulds can be completed in a few hours under local ambient conditions.
