Taiwan has been the major traditional supplier to the Japanese banana market and is likely to maintain that position, mainly because of consumer preference, strong commercial links in the banana trade, and the vigour of the banana industry in Taiwan. Ecuador, the biggest banana exporter in the world, has shown remarkable resilience in meeting shortfalls in supply to the Japanese market. By 1970 Taiwan, the Philippines, and India could between them supply most if not all of the Japanese demand, with Ecuador still in a position to complement and/or compete. Thailand, Malaysia, Mainland China, Honduras, and Fiji would need to fight for a place in what will almost certainly be a buyers' market. Whilst small, the Hong Kong market would repay study because of the dominance of both Mainland Chinese and Thai bananas over Taiwan bananas there. Thai banana production and export have both risen markedly, but yield seems to have fallen. A good deal of data are available on the industry in Thailand, but a comprehensive picture of it seems to be lacking, at least in published form. Such a picture is essential before any soundly based pronoucements can be made on the potential of the industry. S.K
