A number of selected AHGs were chosen by the Chanthaburi Agricultural Extension Officer. The training on the production of durian powder was carried out once at the station of the selected AHGs which also supperted tools and materials. The participants attending this one-day training were members of the AHGs and the staff of the Chanthaburi Agricutlural Extension Office, totaling 23 persons. In addition to this one-day training on utilization of durian powder, making durian cream crusted pie was also arranged for the AHGs with a total of 13 attendants. An evaluation revealed that the trainees had high potential to produce durian powder at reasonable price orders. However, the trained AHGs could produce only dried durian slices of 30 kg per batch. Durian powder could not be produced due to the lack of grinding machine. At the beginning stage, TISTR offered to help the AHGs in grinding dried durian slices into powder, including packing and labeling. Starting from 25 May to 7 July 1999, the Thung Bencha AHG was able to sell a total of 50 kg of durian powder in a 100 g-pack at 25 baht each. Intensive advertisement of durian powder and its utilization on various mass media had been made to promote the sale of the Thung Bencha AHG's durian powder. A private enterprise has already placed an order of two tons. However, this amount is far from production capacity of a single AHG to handle. Therefore, TISTR and the Thailand Research Funds (TRF) have agreed to expand the project on production and utilization of durian powder to other AHGs in the Eastern part of Thailand in the next durian season of the year 2000.
