During 44 visits to the island, notation was made of the locations in which individual gibbons were encountered, and field notes of significant events were made. Of the 19 animals introduced, three females died, two of these deaths being within two weeks of their release. A fourth female disappeared one day after release and was presumed dead. A plot of encounters, made by dividing the whole island into a matrix of 50 m x 50 m squares and placing a single dot for each encounter into the matrix at the appropriate location, showed that only 39 percent of the 50-m areas were used by the gibbons. It appeared that the animals tended to be in places most frequented by people and that they seemed to avoid steep terrains. Eleven of the animals formed four relatively stable groups. The largest home range of these four groups was 8 acres, roughly 20 percent of the size of the smallest gibbon group range in natural forests. S.K
