Meanwhile, the demand for menthol tends to rise every year. Therefore, markets for mint oil and menthol are always available. The promotion of mint production in harmony with the market demand will help to make mint oil and menthol as a major export of Thailand in the future Authorสาระสังเขป: Brazil is known to be the largest mint oil and menthol producer of the world. It used to produce 5,000 to 6,000 tons of mint oil yearly. But at present that country can bring about only 3,000 to 3,500 tons per year. However, Brazil is still able to export over 1,000 tons each of mint oil and menthol. Next to Brazil in menthol production are Japan and Taiwan. But, these two countries have to order mint oil from Brazil as they are not capable of producing enough mint oil in their countries. Among the biggest consumers of menthol of the world are the US, which imports over 1,200 tons of menthol yearly, and the EEC member countries which include England, West Germany, France and the Netherlands. These EEC countries import over 1,000 tons of mint oil and 600 tons of menthol annually. As for Thailand, the demand for menthol is about 100 tons per year; and most of it has to be importedสาระสังเขป: Mint oil is used as a principal raw material in producing menthol. Menthol and mint oil which have been dementaolized can be utilized in pharmaceutical process and cigarette industry. They can also be used to add flavour and taste to sweets, chewing-gum, toothpaste and certain kinds of cosmetics. At present the demand for menthol of the world market is about 3,000 tons per year. This amount is equivalent to about 5,000 to 6,000 tons of mint oil.
