A rough costing indicates that benzoic acid could profitably be made in Thailand from imported toluene at an output of 200 tonnes p.a. or more. Part of the output would need to be converted to sodium benzoate.สาระสังเขป: 2. Apart from its advantages in saving foreign exchange, the establishment of such a relatively simple production could form a nucleus for other chemical manufactures particularly in the organic chemical field, and at the same time builds up skills in this field which could be used in more complex manufactures later on.สาระสังเขป: 3. Imports of benzoic acid into Thailand in 1966 were 52 tonnes but imports of sodium benzoate are not recorded.สาระสังเขป: 4. Known imports of benzoic acid and sodium benzoate into near-by countries in recent years exceed 300 tonnes (as benzoic acid equivalent) and, given a sufficiently large market in Thailand, some of this potential export market could probably be captured by marginal costing.สาระสังเขป: In India and Hong Kong, import of sodium benzoate is about seven times that of benzoic acid, so that, on this pattern, Thai demand for sodium benzoate could be some 300 tonnes. Other evidence, however, tends to make that estimate doubtful and an intensive study of the market seems desirable.
