The reaeration coefficient, K , and the average rate of photosynthetic oxygen production, the parameter "a", are estimated to be 0.205 per day, to base 10, and 0.032 mg/1 per day, respectively. Form the results of field surveys, it is estimated that about 145,000 kg of 5-day 20 degree celsius BOD gain access to the estuary. The laboratory deoxygenation coefficient, K , and the probable average rate of oxygen demand of river muds, the parameter "p", are found to be 0.13 per day, to base 10, and 0.13 mg/1 per day, respectively. Only traces of ammonia nitrogen are found in the estuarine water compared with high concentration of nitrate nitrogen. On a theoretical basis, it is deduced that nitrification is insignificant to the oxygen balance of the estuary, and a more comprehensive study of the kinetics of dentrification in the estuary is recommended before nitrate can be relied upon as a reserve oxygen source at times of extremely low dissolved oxygen concentration in the estuary. Authors.สาระสังเขป: The report presents the main results of research carried out to date on many aspects of the oxygen balance in the Chao Phraya River estuary, which receives essentially untreated wastes from a population of more than 3 millions in Bangkok and Thon Buri. The results of three general pollution surveys of the estuary are used together with data collected for specific purposes. Various aspects of the estuarine by hydraulics are reviewed and the concept of equivalent half-tide distance is developed for use in plotting oxygen sag curves for the estuary. A broad conclusion is that the estuary condition is worsening each year and that anaerobic conditions are likely to occur in the near future in the reach central on km 41 at low river discharge. However, at high river discharge, the estuary can tolerate the likely pollution load in the foreseeable future without causing problems near Bangkok and Thon Buri.
