A survey has been made to locate sources of sands possessing desirable characteristics for moulding, and the study has identified four sands which are suitable for application as synthetic moulding sands, bonded with low percentages of bentonite and usable at low moisture contents. The sands are obtainable in the Bangkok and Thon Buri areas through established commercial suppliers. The appropriate contents of bonding clay and of moisture for the optimum moulding properties of the sands have been established, and the results of tests have been confirmed by a series of casting trials. All the sands have proved successful for casting iron and nonferrous alloys, and two of the sands are also suitable for the production of steel castings. Authors
