Lower pH levels (4.85-5.0) were found during peak activity of the aerobic retters, i.e. between the third and sixth days of retting, and thereafter the pH rose slightly. Throughout the course of retting, the retting liquor was not changed, but sufficient fresh water was added whenever necessary to replace the amount lost through evaporation. The ret was not aerated, but it appeared that mild to moderate aeration might be of advantage if carried out at the proper moment.สาระสังเขป: Microbial activities in aerobic tank retting of green kenaf stalks were found to be most active in the retting bark. Those present in the retting liquor appeared to be spilled out from the bark. Aerobes played a more dominant role in this kind of retting. The active aerobic retters include a Gram-positive spore-forming rod of the Bacillus subtilis type and a Geotrichum sp. The peak of the Bacillus sp. activity in the bark was found to be between the third and fourth days of retting, while that of the Geotrichum sp. occurred between the fourth and fifth days. Even though the number of anaerobes per gramme of retting bark gradually rose after 24 hours of retting, the rise was very slight during the first week of retting. More rapid rise was detected after the eighty day of retting and it remained at the level until the end of the ret. However, the number of anaerobes per gramme of retting bark at the peak of their activity was much lower than the number of aerobes at the latter's peak activity.สาระสังเขป: The anaerobes isolated showed no, or only slight, retting ability by themselves when tested as pure culture, but a synergistic retting activity was detected when mixed inoculum, consisting of the Bacillus sp. and any one of these anaerobes, was used. Evidence obtained so far indicated somewhat unexpectedly that the anaerobes enhanced the retting activity of the aerobes rather than the reverse.สาระสังเขป: The retting bark began to soften from the fourth day of retting, but frank pectinolysis, as evident by histochemical study of the retting bark, was detected from the fifth day of retting, while mild ligninolysis in certain portions of retting bark was detected from the ninth day of retting. Based on time relation of the growth curves, pectinolysis appears to be due to the activity of the aerobes, while ligninolysis could result from the activity of the anerobes or of both of them.
